We needed some retail therapy after some serious sightseeing.

Tomorrow is our last day here in Scotland. We're planning on hanging out with Kristy's family and packing to leave Scotland at 6 am Friday or 1 am EST.

Cheers!

- Baddies are criminals or bad people.

- British game shows are either re-runs from the 80's or have hosts with hair that never left the 80's.

- Take-away is takeout.

- Sit-in is staying in restaurant.

- Glaswegians (people from Glasgow) speak faster than other areas.

- Cuddle is a hug.

- There are birds everywhere. I don't like birds.

- Chew/Chewies is gum.

- Sweeties is candy or chocolate.

- CCTV is everywhere (camera security system) and I mean everywhere, except bathrooms. I've waved at a few cameras. I hope my friendliness won't get me stopped at the airport.

- It's not 15 after 10 o'clock, it's 15 past 10.

- People are super friendly here but they ask you a million questions. Doesn't matter if there is a line behind you, the sales clerk wants to know everything about you.

- When you order a hot drink here, its more like "nuclear" hot drink. I think that's why they eat bland foods here. They have no taste buds left.

- An elevator here does not hold the amount of people it says it can. Unless you are stick people with no bags.

- Don't bump the elevator door inside the elevator when it comes to your floor. It will open on its own. It takes offense and does not open if you bump it. It's okay. We made it out safely.

- Not all Scotsmen look like James McAvoy or Sean Connery. Sorry ladies. I've looked. And not all Scotsmen have beards which was a letdown. I did see one guy who, for me, is what I pictured a Scotmans to be. But it would have looked like stalking on CCTV. So it looks like I'm coming home less a Scotsman.

- Sara is pronounced "Sere-da" here. I like it. I may go with it.

That's all for now....there may be more.

Cheers!
Sere-da

Glasgow. The only way I cam describe Glasgow is its a cross between Pittsburgh and NYC. Industrial and high end financial/arts/fashion. We saw the Glasgow Eye and rode it. We went through the Gallery of Modern Art. Very cool. We then walked to St. Mungo's Cathedral and walked through the Necropolis. One thing I will say, Scotland does their cemeteries up right. Then we trucked it back to the train station for a 3 hour ride back. We got back to Aberdeen early for dinner and an early night.

Day Seven....stay tuned.

There was some technical difficulties. Day Five found us at Stirling Castle. We took the train to Stirling and then trekked up the hill. We stopped at the Church of Scotland, the Olde Jail and then took the path through an old cemetery to the castle. The castle was as large as Edinburgh but had more interactive features. Stirling was beautiful with great views. We could see the Wallace Memorial from the Castle. We then took the train to Glasgow and checked into the hostel. It was a nice hostel. We had dinner in the hostel restaurant and then called it a night.

Day Six Summary is coming up...

We went to the beach and it snowed. We went to her aunt and uncle's house. It was relaxing with a lot of fun and laughing. We moved apartments and now we are in a different part of town. This time the bus driver was very helpful. Tomorrow is Stirling and Glasgow.

-They use coins more than bills for currency. There is a two pound coin, one pound coin, 50 pence (p), 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p. If change is less than a fiver (5 pounds), then you get change back. At first, I did not like this, but the next odds and ends changed my mind.

-You have to pay to use the public toilets and it could be 20p or 30p therefore you need the coins. In a span of a couple of hours, I learned quickly what coins I needed.

-On the train to Edinboro, I was asked twice by two different people if I was "uni." I asked Kristy for a translation and she said they thought I was a college student. That made my trip.

-People are very friendly here except bus drivers. They don't like people asking questions I suppose.

-Some word translations:
Bin is trashcan
Car Park is parking lot or garage
Loo is bathroom
Queue is waiting line
Rubbish is trash
Hill should mean mountain. The hills here are ridiculous.
Royal Mail is the equivalent of the US Postal Service. It does not mean you place your letter to the Queen there.
Dram is a shot.
Cheers is a friendly way to say goodbye.
No worries is the same as you're welcome.
Crisps are chips.
Chips are fries.
Tatties are potatoes. Neeps are turnips.
To do something on the fly is the same as on the go.
They don't have brunch here.
They don't eat pancakes for breakfast. It's for afternoon tea on the fly.
Third floor usually means top floor unless its an office building or hotel.
Quid or bone is the same as pound.

-When crossing the street, you go when it says you go. Learned that quickly and yes I'm okay.

-It rains/hails/snows about every half hour. And then its sunny.

That's all for now. There might be another edition later.

Cheers!
Sara

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02533059313152730469noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8948642394739415823.post-34403397077726886142012-04-15T08:45:00.001-07:002012-04-15T08:45:42.185-07:00Day Three Summary

Saturday was more relaxed. We walked down to Centre City Aberdeen to do some sightseeing and shopping. We had a lovely lunch and then took the bus back to our flat for naps and resting. More fish and chips for dinner and then we watched the King's Speech on our telly. Let me just say watching a British movie in Great Britain is different. Can't explain it but it is. Sunday is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic and there's signs and advertisements everywhere. It is such a different feel over here but not. They listen to American music, watch American movies and even adopted some of the pop culture. It's somewhat comforting to recognize things, but I was surprised by it.

Well, off to Kristy's aunt and uncles house for the day. So looking forward to it.

Cheers!
We took the train to Edinburgh to see the castle and walk the Royal Mile. On the steep, and I mean steep hill, to the castle, we stopped in the National Gallery museum and walked the gardens. The castle was great. Lots of great views and things to see. After the long day at the castle we grabbed dinner at Deacon Brodie's, walked the Royal Mile and stopped at the John Knox house. We got the train back to Aberdeen and called it a day.

Saturday and Sunday are family days with Kristy's family and then our next day trip to Stirling Castle and Glasgow.

Cheers!
